THINGS TO KNOW

A SPECIAL PERSON

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them.

A GOOD LITTLE STORY WITH A GOOD MORAL!

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE."

The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away!!! But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it!!!"

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE!!!

Angels the TRUTH!

Over the years the forces of evil have tried, by every means possible, to discredit the whole concept of Angels. They have gone to great lengths to decry all kinds of devotion to the Holy Angels as superstitious practice. The whole concept of Angels, according to their thinking, is mythical! One such person, to whom I spoke recently, made a point of telling me there was nothing in scripture to substantiate the theory of Angels.

I was happy to tell him that, on the contrary, there are references to Angels in scripture. I referenced Matthew 18: 10 regarding GUARDIAN ANGELS. "See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven look upon the face of my heavenly Father." In Psalm 91 where we read "He commanded his Angels to keep watch over them." I drew his attention to the Annunciation, their role in so many biblical stories, and God's use of them as his messengers and their presence at the Nativity of Jesus. There is undoubtedly ample proof that angels are special and that they do exist.

As a Salvatorian priest, who knew Father Edmund Lannin very well, and learned much from him regarding devotion to the Holy Angels, I would encourage parents, teachers and leaders to emphasize to the children under their care, the importance of remembering and praying to their GUARDIAN ANGEL.

In a world where there is so much godliness and lack of devotion to anything spiritual, the need is all the more urgent. So let you make up your mind today, that you will join us in a daily prayer to the Angels. Better to have them on your side than not eh? Since God chose them they must be special!

WORDS OR EXPRESSIONS
When people speak about their religion or their faith, it inevitably conjures up questions that invite discussion. I had such an experience some time ago. I was with a group of teachers and various topics surfaced. The term AGNOSTIC was used and ultimately challenged. It prompted me to find certain words in our religious vocabulary and try to give a brief definition.

AGNOSTIC
It invariably gets mixed up with another word that has a different meaning - atheist. An Agnostic is one who is not sure whether God exists, or in fact, believes that his existence or non-existence can ever be known by the human mind. So you can see how that would spark off an interesting conversation!

ATHEIST
Is a person who has NO belief in God. There is no doubt in his/her mind that God does not exist. All the persuasion in the world - all the arguments in the world, cannot dissuade or convince him/her.

ANNO DOMINI
It is the term we all use at some time or other. Often it is used without knowing exactly what it means. A.D is the usual way of writing it. It means 'In the year of the Lord.' It derived from a system of dating our years after the birth of Jesus Christ. It was a sixth-century scholar who calculated the system. There are still arguments about the exact date of the birth of Jesus. It may surprise you to know that it is placed between 4 and 7 B.C.

ANGEL
What is an ANGEL? This is a question I am often asked. The definition of an ANGEL is given as follows. An ANGEL is a wholly spiritual being created by God and used by him as his messengers. An ANGEL is a superior being with many more powers than us mortals. By an act of DISOBEDIENCE some of them, under LUCIFER (The Devil), fell and became evil spirits who tempt mankind. Angels are traditionally divided into two categories or CHOIRS - GOOD and BAD. We, you and I, have a special ANGEL watching over us. He is called OUR GUARDIAN ANGEL and we should often pray to him/her to watch over us.

SIN
Living in a very secular and materialistic world, it would seem people have become lax in their understanding of SIN. Many are of the opinion that it is only wrong if one is caught! This is totally false and misleading. Sin, when speaking of God's laws, is, simple put as, 'BREAKING GOD'S LAW," nothing more, nothing less. If the matter is serious (Grave) and we FREELY and FULLY understand, then the sin is termed MORTAL. As a result the SOUL is deprived of God's GRACE. If the sin is not MORTAL it is known as VENIAL. We can commit sins in THOUGHT, WORD or DEED. The very first sin is called ORIGINAL Sin or the SIN of our FIRST PARENTS.

FISH
Did you know that the humble fish is used as a symbol of JESUS CHRIST. In the early years of the church when Christians were being abused and tortured for their faith, people used the symbol of a fish to let other people know they were not alone. The FISH became a signal or special code word, for the followers of Jesus. In fact, the letters of the Greek word for FISH, comprise the initials of JESUS CHRIST, SON OF GOD, SAVIOR. So the next time you are out driving and you see the fish symbol stuck on the back of a car you will know what it symbolizes.

Arthur The Mouse

Arthur was the smallest of the six Albino mice born to his mum, Leaf. Being small was good and bad. Good because he got notice from his parents. Bad because he found it very difficult to get milk or food at meal times. His bigger brothers and sisters pushed him out of the way most of the time. Arthur was a very patient little mouse and never tried to bully his way in. His Mom and Dad usually kept a close eye on him and made sure, when everyone else had finished eating that he got food. This made Arthur feel special and he loved being special.

As he began to get bigger it seemed the other members of the family stayed the same size. Eventually Arthur was bigger than most of them. He was such a good mouse he never once lost his temper nor made selfish demands. This is where his goodness shone. When food was around he still stayed behind until the others got their share. Because of his KINDNESS and CARE for his brothers and sisters he was soon a favorite. His parents were so proud of him and he felt special because he had learned to be so good.

IF YOU ARE KIND AND LOVING OTHERS WILL LOVE AND CARE FOR YOU!

Martha

Martha was the oldest of three girl squirrels. All three were born of a famous mother and father. Their mother was a movie star, their dad was a warrior hunter. So the girls had much to live with as they grew up. Martha took after her mother. She was petite and very sensitive. She did not take kindly to being upset. Her other two sisters made sure her patience was tried regularly. In fairness to Martha she rarely lost her temper. Both her parents saw in her great potential leadership qualities. They were brought to the fore very early in her life.

GOD GIVEN QUALITIES MUST ALWAYS BE USED FOR GOOD!!!
